Amazing Grace
Amazing Grace is a concert documentary unlike any other as we watch legend Aretha Franklin record the eponymous gospel album at the New Temple Missionary Baptist Church in Los Angeles in 1972 in front of a live audience and backed by a local choir. [Trailer]
Why you should watch it: Amazing Grace successes begin and end with Aretha Franklin’s incredible voice, presence, and spirit. Sydney Pollack’s documentary is stitched together from until now unseen footage. The unconventional editing and rawness of the camerawork contribute to the emotion permeating from Franklin, the choir, and the audience. More than many concert documentaries, Amazing Grace feels like it communicates the feeling of being in the room — the love and affection.
