Jake Gyllenhaal IV: The Sisters Brothers 🐎
In movie news: A Marilyn Monroe movie is in the works
☀️ Happy Thursday! One more day until Friday. You can do it.
Today’s recommendation for our week dedicated to movies starring Jake Gyllenhaal is a cowboy movie — and no, it’s not the one you’re thinking of. Actually, this movie is billed as a western, dark comedy, crime drama, so yeah, not Brokeback Mountain. In movie news, everything we know about Netflix’s new Marilyn Monroe movie and the trailer for Blake Lively’s follow up to A Simple Favor.
Here’s day 4️⃣.
Today’s movie: The Sisters Brothers
STREAMING ON HULU
What it’s about: Brothers Eli (John C. Reilly) and Charlie Sisters (Joaquin Phoenix) are hired guns who are tasked by a businessman only known as the Commodore (Rutger Hauer — RIP) to capture Hermann Kermit Warm (Riz Ahmed), who he accused of stealing from him. So, they hatch a plan to have private detective John Morris (Jake Gyllenhaal) track him down so the Sisters brothers can kill him.
Why it’s great: It takes some time to get into The Sisters Brothers, but once you’re in, you’re in. It’s pitch black, both in story and humor, with moments that leave you confounded, delighted, and somewhere in between. It’s hard to exactly pinpoint what’s great about The Sisters Brothers, but it mostly comes back to the main quartet. Each of them has their endearing quirks, Eli is a sweet romantic, Charlie is a perennially drunk psychopath, Hermann is a bright-eyed man with a dream and John Morris is the kind of winking devil that you can’t help resist. Together, they get you through the movie’s drier patches for a wonderfully weird western.
The key players:
🎬 Jacques Audiard
🖋 Jacques Audiard & Thomas Bidegain
🎭 John C. Reilly, Joaquin Phoenix, Jake Gyllenhaal, Riz Ahmed, Rebecca Root, Rutger Hauer, Allison Tolman, Carol Kane
The details: ⏳ 119 minutes // 🇺🇸🇫🇷 U.S. & France // 📺 Trailer
Fun fact: Even though the movie is a western, none of it was actually filmed in the U.S. Production took place in France, Spain, and Romania.
Don’t have Hulu? The Sisters Brothers is available to buy or rent on Prime Video, iTunes, and YouTube.
In movie news: Here’s what we know about Netflix’s Marilyn Monroe movie
💎 Production on Netflix’s Marilyn Monroe biopic — based on the bestselling novel Blonde by Joyce Carol Oates — has begun. Ana de Armas will tackle the role of the blonde bombshell and will be joined by Garret Dillahunt, Scoot McNairy, Lucy DeVito, Bobby Cannavale, and Julianne Nicholson. Brad Pitt’s production company Plan B will also be producing.
My take: My Week with Marilyn, the last major movie about Marilyn Monroe, nabbed two Oscar nominations, but was never a major contender. With Netflix, Plan B, and The Assassination of Jesse James by the Coward Robert Ford director Andrew Dominik on board — not to mention Blade Runner 2049 breakout de Armas — this could be a major hit.
🥁 The trailer for the Blakey Lively led international spy thriller The Rhythm Section by director Reed Morano (The Handmaid’s Tale) is here!
My take: The movie looks like a cross between Atomic Blonde (good) and Red Sparrow (bad). However, Lively just got off her best performance to date in A Simple Favor and she’s joined by Jude Law and Sterling K. Brown in the cast. So, I’m liking the beat of this trailer.
That’s all for today. Hope you have a great night and an even better Friday!
See you tomorrow,
