Best Movies of the Decade Pt. 1: The Florida Project š
Plus, a review of CĆ©line Sciamma's 'Portrait of a Lady on Fire'
āļø
Happy Monday!
Welcome to December.
Weāre counting down the days to the new decade, so letās take a look back at some of the
best movies of the 2010s
. Instead of the theme covering just one week, Iām going to be talking about the best of the decade all month!
Also:
Iām trying out a new format. Let me know what you think!
Okay, hereās day one.
Today's Movie //Ā Streaming on Prime Video
The Florida Project
Precocious six-year-old Moonee (Brooklynn Prince) lives a life of troublemaking and mischief in āMagic Castle,ā a motel on the outskirts of Orlando managed by Bobby (Willem Dafoe). And though it seems like magic to her, her impoverished childhood is anything but. (

Why you should watch it:
The Florida Project
has a childlike POV. But this isnāt a family movie despite its charm and flashes of humor. Director Sean Baker has always made movies about those living in the periphery of society and this is no exception.
Though Mooneeās mother (Bria Vinaite) does her best to protect her daughter from the truthās about their circumstances, itās a constant struggle for her. The movie portrays that struggle with empathy for the characters making it sobering, but full of heart.

My review:
Quiet yet filled with intensity,
Portrait of a Lady on Fire
nails the physicality and emotions associated with mutual unspoken attraction āĀ the glances, the awkwardness, the frustrations. Itās a slow burn ā pun intended ā as it builds the relationship between the protagonists, but the pay off is absolutely worth the wait. (
