Happy Thursday! Twenty-two years ago today, Reed Hastings and Marc Randolph founded Netflix. In celebration, we’re sharing a movie streaming on Hulu 😉. Here’s day three of our 2019 favorites series.
Does anyone actually enjoy wedding season?
Plus One
STREAMING ON HULU
What’s it about: Plus One follows two single friends (PEN15’s Maya Erskine and The Boys’ Jack Quaid) — one recently dumped and the other a commitment-phobe — who agree to be each other’s plus one for the ten weddings they have to attend that summer. One thing leads to another and… well, you know how it goes.
Why it’s great: The rom-com works best when it’s character-driven and has a fresh perspective, both of which Plus One has. However, it also helps that the movie is so incredibly funny and filled with sharp one-liners delivered with precision by Maya Erskine and Jack Quaid. But it’s Erskine who really steals the show with one great sarcastic quip after another.
“I cried… but I cry every day, so it doesn’t mean anything” — Me (but also Erskine in the movie)
It’s not perfect. The story drags in the third act and it falls into some genre cliches. But, for the most part, Plus One is a hilarious and, dare I say, relatable take on the classic romantic comedy formula with enough gags to keep you hooked.
The key players:
🎬🖋 Jeff Chan & Andrew Rhymer
🎭 Maya Erskine, Jack Quaid, Beck Bennett, Ed Begley Jr.
The details: ⏳ 98 minutes // 🇺🇸 U.S. // 📝 My full review // 📺 Trailer
Fun fact: Jack Quaid is the son of Dennis Quaid and rom-com royalty Meg Ryan, who’s best known for her role in When Harry Met Sally — “I’ll have what she’s having.”
Don’t have Hulu? Plus One is available to buy or rent on Prime Video, iTunes, and Google Play.
In movie news:
🗓 The three largest American theater chains — AMC, Regal, and Cinemark — won’t be playing Martin Scorsese’s The Irishman since they require a 90-day exclusivity window.
Netflix, the film’s distributor, will make it available for streaming just 2️⃣6️⃣ days after its theatrical release. Should Netflix allow movies to play in theaters longer? Reply or tweet me your thoughts.
Remember when we were all impressed that Richard Linklater’s Boyhood was shot over the span of 12 years? Well, his newest project, an adaptation of the Sondheim musical Merrily We Roll Along will reportedly be filmed over the course of *20 years*. Hopefully we all make it until then.
👻 Ghostbusters is returning to theaters for its 35th anniversary in October. *Cue the theme song*
Tomorrow will be a little different. Guess you’re just gonna have to come back and see 😉.
