Welcome to the first-ever edition of the Smash Cut newsletter 🎉 Thanks for joining!
Every weekday evening, I’ll send you a movie recommendation based around the week’s theme. That theme could be a genre, a director, an actor, or anything really. It’s my newsletter, after all.
What better way to kick it all off than with some of my favorite 2019 movies so far.
While many of the year’s best movies aren’t streaming just yet, this week, I’ll share four 2019 movies I’ve enjoyed — each available for free on one of the major streaming platforms. Here’s day 1 🏆.
Give me feedback! Got any good movie recommendations? Or have a theme suggestion for next week? Reply to this email or tweet them at me!
Apollo 11
STREAMING ON HULU
What’s it about: Apollo 11 stitches together never before seen — and almost unbelievable — archival footage from the first mission to put a man on the moon.
Why it’s great: It’s almost unbelievable that Apollo 11 is made solely of archive footage. Every shot and camera move feels so intentional that it almost feels like some of it must have been shot for the documentary. Even though you know the ending — if you don’t, please seek help — it doesn’t make it any less impactful or tense. It’s one of the best documentaries of the year (decade?) because it doesn’t feel like a documentary at all. It feels like you’re watching a narrative feature and a real-time mission at the same time.

Don’t have Hulu? Apollo 11 is available to buy or rent on Prime Video, iTunes, or Google Play.
